Latin America has birthed hundreds of fabulous singers, and Mexico is no exception. Over the years, the world has seen one star after another emerge from sunny Mexico, offering rancheras, pop, and rock music that’s loved across the globe.

Mexico has given the world a lot of female singers, but some stand out more than others, and in this article, we’re going to take a look at 15 of the greatest and most famous Mexican female singers of all time. Let’s get started.

1. Thalía

Up first, we have Ariadna Thalía Sodi Miranda Mottola who is better known by her stage name, Thalía.

Often called the “Queen of Latin Pop,” she’s a winner of five Billboard Latin Music Awards helping this best-selling artist to solidify her place in history.

Born in Mexico City, she started her career at age one when she appeared in a TV commercial. She suffered greatly from her father’s death in 1976 but overcame her struggles to start her music career in 1990 when she released her first album.

In more recent years, Thalía released her first children’s album, kicked off her first world tour, and made her directorial debut. She’s also dabbled in clothing design, magazine publication, and authorship and shows no sign of stopping any time soon.

2. Anahí

Born Anahí Giovanna Puente Portilla de Velasco, Anahí is a singer and actress also born in Mexico City.

Her career began in 1986 when she landed her first acting role. Since then, she’s appeared in several other movies and telenovelas. 

Her singing career kicked off though in 1993 when she released her self-titled first studio album at the young age of only ten years old.

But, it wasn’t until 2005 that she joined the group RBD, a pop group that quickly rose to international fame. The group stayed together until 2008 when they took their final tour.

Anahí dove back into her solo career after RBD split, launching her first new single in 2009. Since then, she’s presented at the Kids’ Choice Awards and collaborated with her former bandmates and the famed Puerto Rican rapper Wisin. 

3. Chavela Vargas

Isabel Vargas Lizano, better known as Chavela Vargas, started her career in Mexico singing on the streets. An immigrant from Costa Rica, Vargas moved to Mexico when she was 17, searching for better opportunities.

Vargas preferred to dress as a man, which caused her parents to hide her away from guests in her youth. However, as she grew, she gained a name for herself as a singer of ranchers.

She made her acting debut in 1967 and had minor roles in other films through 2006.

After a fifteen-year battle with alcoholism, Vargas retired in 1970. Her career gained a fresh start when she reemerged in 2006.

She acquired Mexican nationality late in life, only enjoying the status briefly before her death in 2012.

4. Lola Beltrán

María Lucila Beltrán Ruiz, also known as Lola Beltrán, was a Regional Mexican singer, actress, and presenter.

Beltrán was born in El Rosario, where she became a secretary while appearing in singing competitions.

Considered one of the most important ranchera singers of all time, Beltrán performed in front of many notable audiences. Her most famous song, “Priscilla el que se fue,” solidified this title.

Beltrán had a long, illustrious career that involved multiple albums, shows, and performances. Sadly, Beltrán died in 1996, not long after completing her album, Disco del Siglo. 

5. Margo Rey

Born in Acapulco, Margo Rey was the stage name for Margarita Reymundo-Jurado.

She started her career with a few different all-female music groups. These included Debutante, The Ritual, and Miss Margo & The Lost Souls, which focused on Latin Jazz and R&B.

As well as singing she’s also active in the theater and her acting career took off in 1998 when she was cast in the titular role in Selena Forever.

From there, she continued to work as an actress, vocalist, and voiceover artist for Spanish and English companies. Her most recent release was her 2012 album Habit, with the single “Tempted” hitting #28 on the charts.

6. Dulce María

Dulce María is the stage name for Mexican pop star Dulce María Espinosa Saviñón.

Born in Mexico City, María is an accomplished singer, songwriter, actress, author, and the great-niece of artist Frida Kahlo. 

Despite being known by her famous great aunt, María started to make a name for herself at age eight, when she appeared on Plaza Sesamo, Mexico’s version of Sesame Street. 

She was a member of a few youth pop groups before taking on a lead role in Clase 406 in 2002.

She released her first solo single in 2010 after collaborating with American singer Akon. Since then, she’s released three other albums. 

7. Maite Perroni

Maite Perroni Beorlegul, who goes by Maite Perroni, is a Mexican-born actress, singer, songwriter, fashion designer, and producer.

After graduating from a 2-year acting program, she landed one of the lead roles on Rebelde, a popular telenovela. 

Her music career began with the pop group RBD, which split up in 2008. A few years later, in 2013, Perroni released her first solar album, Eclipse de Luna.

She’s had a few more singles since then, but the bulk of her career now is focused on film and her role as the spokesmodel for NYX makeup.

8. Camila Sodi

Next is Camila Sodi who is a pop and rock singer, actress, and model born and raised in Mexico City.

She began her career as a model in 2002 before switching over to her role in the telenovela Inocente de Ti. She’s also the niece of Thalía who we looked at earlier.

Sodi has released one album so far, entitled Elle & El Muerto, in 2013. Before that, she hosted the hit Mexican music show TeleHit.

9. Gloria Trevi

Gloria Trevi, also known by her birth name, Gloria de los Ángeles Treviño Ruiz, is a singer, songwriter, director, TV personality, and businesswoman. She was born in Monterrey but moved to Mexico City to begin her music career.

Trevi’s singing career began in 1985 when she joined the pop group Bosquitas Pintadas.

After the group split in 1988, she got to work on her first solo album, which she released the following year.

Her rapid fame and talent earned her the nickname “Madonna of Mexico.” She’s released albums and toured regularly with massive success ever since.

10. Belinda Peregrín

Belinda Peregrín Schüll is a Spanish-Mexican pop singer and actress who goes by Belinda.

A descendent of a famous French bullfighter, Peregrín moved to Mexico when she was four years old. S

he displayed acting and singing talent as a child, and her career began in 2000 when she earned her first role in a telenovela.

Peregrín’s singing career began in the early 2000s, with her first album, Belinda, in 2003. Since then, she’s played multiple TV and movie roles, contributed to several soundtracks, and released three more albums. 

11. Paulina Rubio

Paulina Susana Rubio Dosamantes is best known by her stage name, Paulina Rubio.

She was born in Mexico City in 1971 and began her career as a pop star in 1982 with the group Timbiriche.

She’s considered the Queen of Latin Pop and is historically one of the best-selling Latin music artists. 

Rubio released her first solo album in 1992, kicking off her career as a solo artist with great success. She’s consistently held top spots on the Billboard charts, with three of her albums hitting #1. 

12. Aracely Arámbula

Aracely Arámbula is a Mexican actress, model, singer, and TV personality from Chihuahua City, Mexico.

She performed in several beauty pageants as a child, which helped kick-start her career at a young age with her career beginning in 1994.

After holding several roles, she switched to music, releasing her first commercial pieces in 2001, including contributing to the Abrazame Muy Fuerte soundtrack.

She’s since released two more studio albums, which received multiple award nominations. 

13. Natalia Lafourcade

Considered one of the most successful Latin pop stars of all time, Natalia Lafourcade, was born in Mexico City in 1984. She’s a singer and songwriter who’s experimented in various pop genres.

Lafourcade is the daughter of renowned Chilean singer Gastón Lafourcade and pianist María del Carmen Silva Contreras.

The music in her blood led Lafourcade to study music starting at a young age. At 14, she joined the pop group Twist, but its lack of success caused them to break up a year later.

She released her self-titled solo album in 2002 to resounding success. Since then, she’s released nine different albums, all of which have seen massive commercial success.

14. Paulina Goto

Another pop singer and actress, Paulina Goto was born Paulina Gómez Torres in 1991 in Monterrey.

Her public career began in 2008 when she became the host of Roomies, a popular kids’ news show. She later attended drama school, where she studied singing, acting, and dance.

Her singing career took off in 2010 when she landed a role on the musical TV series Miss XV, and she went on to land the role of Sandy in the Spanish remake of Grease.

2010 was also when she signed with Sony Music Mexico releasing her first single, “Mio,” in June of 2010. Since then, she’s taken up several acting roles and released three more albums.

15. Lucero

And finally, Lucero is another mexican pop singer from Mexico City. whose career kicked off in 1980, when she appeared on the Mexican children’s show Alegrías De Mediodía.

She held roles in several other shows and films, and she released her first album, Te Prometo, in 1982.

Lucero was one of the most successful Latin singers of the 80s, and that success carried through into the 90s and 21st century.

She sings in three languages and has won dozens of music awards. She continues to bounce between acting and singing.
